After two years, we’re finally back to holding a Memorial Day Parade on May 30th! This is brought to us by the South Portland War Veterans Memorial Association.
Memorial Weekend ceremonies will start on May 28th with people from all walks of life placing small American flags on Veterans graves in several South Portland cemeteries. Anyone interested in joining the effort can gather at 413 Broadway in South Portland at 9:00am at the Stewart P. Morrill American Legion Post 35. The Post will have flags and markers, supplied by the city, and cemetery assignment will be divided up amongst those participating.
It will begin at 10:30am from the SMCC parking lot and head down Broadway with a culmination at the Veterans Memorial in Mill Creek Park. At the end of the parade, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial where local city leaders will say a few words, featuring music from the South Portland High School band.
A small Veterans lunch will be provided at the Stewart P. Morrill American Legion Post at noon. Feel free to stop by for a tour of the Post and visit the Military Museum off Peary Terrace.
Memorial Day is a remembrance to honor all military personnel who were killed while in service of our country, whereas Veterans Day is to honor all Veterans who have served.
